Igniting The Spark of Learning

Phonics and Reading

At Mayplace, we know that reading is key to developing children’s understanding of themselves and the world around them. As part of our Green Curriculum, we want children to engage with a range of people, places and ideas which will allow them to become global citizens in a rapidly changing world. Our core texts are at the heart of these learning experiences. On a daily basis, teachers read aloud to children from high-quality texts (both classic and contemporary) which form the basis of each half-termly topic, and around which all other lessons are based. We expose children to ambitious vocabulary, challenging themes and engaging stories which capture their imaginations and help to develop a love of reading from an early age.

We follow a Systematic, Synthetic Phonics programme based on Letters and Sounds in Reception and Key Stage One to develop children’s ability to read fluently. Lessons are taught daily and our aim is for all children to decode fluently by the end of Year 2. Comprehension skills are developed simultaneously, with children taking part in whole-class discussions about texts during story times: making predictions and inferring information about characters in stories and poems. No Nonsense Spelling is followed from Year 2 onwards, providing a natural progression after children reach the end of our phonics programme. By Year 3, all children take part in whole-class guided reading lessons which feature deep reading of extracts from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. Lessons are planned around the reading domains from the National Curriculum, which are taught explicitly to children as VIPERS (vocabulary, infer, predict, explain, retrieve, summarise / sequence). In Reception and Key Stage One, children take home reading books which are phonically decodable and in-line with the stage of their learning in the phonics programme in school. All children in school are set homework on Reading Eggs or Reading Eggspress and have the option to bring home a Reading for Pleasure book of their choice, which is monitored by their teacher.

Our aim at Mayplace is for all children to develop a love of reading and, in addition to reading engaging, challenging texts, children take part in regular Reading for Pleasure activities through the year, such as sponsored reads, spelling bees, World Book Day and reading class swaps. All children leave Mayplace able to read confidently in any subject and are readers for life, with a passion for literature and the English language, a wide understanding of English heritage and global events, and a clear understanding of their place in the world.
