Igniting The Spark of Learning

ERIC Time

It is our aim that all leave Year 6 able to read fluently and confidently in any subject when they reach secondary school; we place great emphasis on a love of reading. Pupils and adults are knowledgeable of a range of non-fiction, contemporary & classic fiction and poetry and book-talk is a key feature of all classrooms. Daily ERIC (Everyone Reading In Class) times allow pupils to read to adults in class and discuss the books they are reading. This also ensures teachers can assess children’s reading ability regularly and provide extra support or challenge for those who need it. We ensure that reading lessons feature a wide range of quality texts to provide experience of authors, stories and characters from different backgrounds in order to expand all children’s cultural capital. Children understand more about their world through knowledge gained through these quality texts. Adults read aloud to children daily and provide opportunities for children to read aloud, as well as performing their own and others’ writing in order to further embed their understanding of language and its rules.
