Whole Class Guided Reading
By Year 2, all children take part in whole-class guided reading lessons which feature deep reading of extracts from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. Lessons are planned in two-weekly sequences with a regular rotation of texts. Comprehension skills are taught explicitly, using the reading domains from the National Curriculum. These are taught to children as VIPERS (vocabulary, infer, predict, explain, retrieve, summarise / sequence).
Guided Reading lessons take place four times per week.
Lessons are planned in two-weekly sequences, using extracts from one text which is often supplemented using related texts which provide contextual knowledge or provide an opportunity to compare one text with another.
All children access the same library of challenging, engaging texts to ensure equal exposure to high-quality book-talk.
Lessons follow a pedagogy which provides opportunity to explore vocabulary, discuss opinions, make comparisons and deepen understanding through drama, performance and comprehension.
