Modern Foreign Languages (French)
At Mayplace, we recognise that pupils are living in a rapidly changing world, in which language learning within the wider curriculum plays an important role. Our French curriculum equips our children with the skills that they need for them to be independent and confident thinkers. Within a rich curriculum, children will learn skills and gain knowledge for life. We believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language in question is acquired. We aim to foster an interest in learning languages and by introducing young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun. We also aim to help children value cultural similarities and differences.
Our curriculum is designed to engage, challenge and excite all pupils, regardless of ability and should be aspirational for all. The curriculum embeds skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as language learning strategies and, in so doing, lays the foundations for future study. Weekly lessons and recap activities will improve the children’s retention of knowledge.
We want our children to make informed choices, which support sustainability and enable them to become active global citizens of the future. The French curriculum supports children’s understanding of the Global Goals for example in Year 6 the children study environmental concerns and make contact with a school in France to broaden their understanding of the wider world.
